About this work

Three children stand shoulder to shoulder before a decorated Christmas tree hung with round ornaments and tinsel. The left child wears a white pierrot costume with dark pom-pom buttons, a finger to her mouth; the center child wears a masquerade mask over a ruffled collar; the right child, in a headdress, holds a large red rosette to her chest.

The scene is painted in a narrow range of blues, whites, and blacks, broken only by the mask's flesh tone and red rosette. Thick brushstrokes model the ornaments and fabric folds, while deep shadow swallows the tree into near-silhouette. The muted, nocturnal palette and the children's still expressions give the festive subject a subdued, expectant mood.
