About this work
A half-length Madonna tenderly embraces the Christ Child, her cheek pressed to his as he reaches up to touch her chin; both figures are set within a raised gold halo bearing Cyrillic inscriptions abbreviating Mother of God and Jesus Christ, the infant wrapped in a beaded golden garment and Mary in a maroon veil lined with pale blue.
The background is built up with dense relief ornament resembling hammered metalwork, all glazed in warm ochre and burnt-orange tones; skin is painted in smooth flattened yellow-gold planes with simplified features, evoking traditional icon painting reworked with a heavily textured, almost sculptural surface and a hushed, devotional stillness.
