About this work
The Virgin, veiled in blue over a red garment, holds the standing Christ Child against a radiant gold halo inscribed with Latin text. Two Gothic arches frame the pair, opening onto a view of St Mark's Basilica, the Doge's Palace and a gondola on a Venetian canal. Below, a chalice, two perched birds, split pomegranates and gilded fish are arranged along a stone ledge.
Saturated blue and red drapery is set against pale stone architecture and a flat gold ground, with crisp, smooth outlines and jewel-like color in the still-life details. The blend of gold-ground icon convention with precise architectural rendering creates a solemn, devotional atmosphere.
