About this work
A weathered stone bridge with a deep arch spans a narrow canal, its reflection rippling in the dark water below. Tall Venetian houses in red, magenta and cream rise on both sides, pierced by shuttered windows and topped with chimneys, while a couple walks along the near embankment and other figures cross the bridge.
Thick impasto strokes build the crumbling stone and stucco walls, and an unnaturally vivid green sky heightens the scene's saturated, jewel-like color. Deep shadows and dense texture give the townscape a heavy, dreamlike intensity rather than topographic calm.
