About this work
A nude woman lies back on a bed heaped with white linen and a gold pillow, arms raised above her head and eyes closed, in a pose recalling classical depictions of Danae. To the left, framed by a curtained doorway, a harlequin in a red costume and jester's cap plucks a mandolin, with a canal and pastel Venetian buildings visible behind him.
Warm flesh tones and white bedding dominate the foreground, set against the cooler blues and greens of the canal glimpsed through the window. Brushwork is soft and blended on the figure, looser in the harlequin's costume, with gentle light across the reclining body. The pairing of nude and carnival musician gives the scene a dreamlike undertone.
