About this work
Rows of closely packed houses with red-tiled and white-washed walls climb a steep hillside, their windows and arched openings picked out in dark accents. A tall stone retaining wall with arcaded openings runs along the base, dropping to greenery and a path in the foreground, while a bell tower and denser trees mark the crest of the hill.
Warm terracotta, cream and pale ochre dominate the massed houses, set against cool grey stone and deep green foliage. Even daylight keeps the scene legible without harsh shadow, and thick, blocky brushstrokes define each rooftop and facade, giving the old town a settled, timeless calm.
