About this work
At left a woman with large russet-and-gold feathered wings stands in a draped white gown, tucking a violin under her chin and drawing the bow, her back and hip exposed beneath the fabric. Beside her a second figure hangs upside down, wrapped in a swirling red cloak and green-feathered wing shapes, one arm raised, head near the water below. Behind both, a lakeside town of red-roofed, domed buildings fills the horizon.
Warm flesh and gold-leafed wings stand out against cool greens and dusty pinks, painted in smooth, tightly controlled strokes with gilded highlights. The calm violinist and the plunging, inverted companion create a charged contrast between stillness and fall, giving the picture a tense, dreamlike drama.
