About this work
An elderly bearded man with small horns and wind-swept hair grips a long staff, standing shoulder to shoulder with a bare-chested young woman. Around the pair, six dolphins leap and swim through a rich blue sea that fills the whole circular field, their curved bodies echoing the roundel's shape.
Deep ultramarine is worked in visible directional strokes to suggest moving water, while the dolphins are outlined in silvery grey-white and the figures in warm ochre and rose flesh tones. The composition's circling rhythm and the calm, direct gazes of the pair create a fluid, dreamlike underwater scene.
