About this work
A group of tall, thin-trunked trees with rust-brown and gold leaves rises at the far edge of an open green field, some already half bare. Smaller saplings and low shrubs dot the grass to the left, while the field itself rolls forward in broad bands of green under a wide, clouded sky streaked with pink light near the horizon.
Broad, dragged strokes of green build the field's surface while the trees are picked out in loaded, dry-brush touches of ochre and brown. The loose, direct brushwork and subdued palette give the scene a quiet, slightly melancholic calm typical of late-season fields under a fading sky.
