About this work
A crowded tabletop brings together a black rooster, a ribbed pumpkin, blue glass vessels, a metal jug, a bowl of green pears, a wedge of yellow watermelon and a spiral shell, arranged before a woman in a ruffled collar and tall wrapped headdress seated at the table's edge. Below the table, three white rabbits leap along a dark red band, while three arched openings behind reveal a pink sunset sky, distant hills and a small bird in flight.
Rich jewel tones of teal, gold, magenta and deep brown are built up in flat, decorative patches with strong outlines, giving every object a stylized, almost heraldic clarity. The warm glow of the sunset arches contrasts with the dark foreground, and the whimsical procession of rabbits below adds a light, fable-like playfulness to the composition.
