About this work
On a black-and-white cloth stenciled with stylized swallows and fish, a gray jug of orange trumpet flowers and a gleaming gold teapot anchor the upper half. Below, halved cantaloupe and its wedges sit on a white plate next to a banana, while a red apple, an orange dish of grapes and plums, and scattered loose fruit fill the lower table.
Warm terracotta frames the graphic black-and-white pattern, against which the fruit's saturated yellows, oranges, and reds pop. Brushwork is flat and decorative on the cloth's folk motifs but more rounded and modeled on the fruit and metal, giving the composition a playful, folkloric charm.
