About this work
Two women in military uniform stand shoulder to shoulder in the foreground, one gazing upward with an arm raised, while a partly visible male head appears behind them. Below, a fallen figure lies across the base of the group, and to the right another figure crouches, head bowed and hands raised to the face. A rifle outline and a red star are sketched at the upper edges.
Grisaille grays and warm gold dominate, the gold applied in loose drips and splashes that spatter across the uniformed figures like scorch marks or light. Bold outlines and monument-like poses give the group a sculptural, frieze-like weight, while the raw, unblended gold introduces a restless, urgent energy against the otherwise somber tonal painting.
