About this work
A cluster of small wooden houses with lit windows sits low in the composition, overshadowed by a large pale, curving form that floats above the rooftops like a hovering bird or cloud. Two shell-like shapes flank the upper corners, and a tall pole or mast rises through the huddle of buildings toward the strange form overhead.
The whole surface is worked in heavy impasto in earthy oranges, browns and ochres, with passages of blue and violet breaking through the encrusted paint. Forms are simplified and semi-abstract, dissolving village and sky into a single textured field. The mood is dreamlike and enigmatic, closer to folk myth than to an observed landscape.
