About this work
The canvas is covered edge to edge with heavy, gestural strokes of paint applied wet-into-wet. Bands of color sweep in from the left while a dense, roughly oval cluster of black, white, and violet marks sits at the center, its dark patches loosely suggesting eye sockets and a jaw beneath a scatter of bright color.
Saturated blues, yellows, pinks, and greens are dragged and layered with a heavily loaded brush or palette knife, building thick ridges of impasto and visible drips down the surface. The clash of vivid hues against the somber dark core produces a churning, unsettled mood.
