About this work
A cluster of village houses and a taller church with a red spire stands on a rise behind rolling fields. A pale dirt road curves through striped rows of lavender and clumps of shrubbery topped with pink and crimson blossom, leading the eye back toward the settlement under a heavy, streaked sky.
Thick, dark storm clouds fill the upper half of the canvas, streaked with falling rain and pierced by a bright disc of light, while the fields below are rendered in flat, saturated bands of green, violet and pink. The contrast between the brooding sky and the almost decorative, patterned color of the land gives the scene a charged, theatrical mood.
