About this work
A harlequin figure in a patchwork of colored triangles lies stretched along an ornately carved bench woven with climbing roses, chin resting in one hand, face turned toward the viewer above a ruffled collar. On the floor below sit a discarded pink high-heeled shoe, a small mask, and a grey mouse, while beyond the bench a dark garden pond reflects fireworks bursting in the night sky.
The patchwork costume is built from flat, jewel-toned triangles of red, blue, green, gold, and black, set against pale cream and touched with glittering, gold-flecked highlights in the fireworks. The decorative, flattened treatment and theatrical props give the scene a whimsical, faintly eerie storybook atmosphere.
