About this work
Five figures stand in a row against a black background, each holding the control bar of a wooden marionette whose strings run down to a jointed puppet performing on the floor below. Their expressions are absorbed and inward-looking as they adjust the strings; the puppets mimic gestures in turn, one raising an arm, another stepping or kneeling, as if caught mid-performance.
Strong single-source lighting picks out faces, hands and clothing against deep black, so the figures seem to emerge from darkness like actors on a stage. Skin and fabric are rendered in smooth realist modeling, while the wooden puppets carry warm ochre highlights that catch the light. The repetition of poses and heavy shadow give the scene a hushed, theatrical tension between control and performance.
