About this work
An elderly man stands nude but for brief shorts, his thin frame turned three-quarter to the viewer. He grips a straight wooden stick laid across the back of his shoulders, one hand raised near his ear and the other lower near the opposite shoulder. His head turns down in profile, and his ribs and collarbones are sharply visible beneath the skin.
Drawn in reddish sanguine chalk on toned paper, the study emphasizes bone and sinew through fine hatched lines and rubbed shadow along the torso. The spare, warm reddish-brown tone and stark anatomical detail give the figure a frail, somber presence typical of an academic study.
