About this work

The left panel shows a man in a field jacket walking off carrying a small bundle, seen against a dark ground. The center panel isolates two hands gripped together in a tight handshake or embrace, rendered close up. The right panel depicts a woman in a headscarf holding a child close to her chest, ringed by radiating streaks of light.

Gold, black and ochre unify the three panels, with dripping and spattered paint breaking up otherwise smooth passages of near-monochrome figures. Loose, gestural strokes and streaked underpainting give a scorched, weathered surface, while the radial gold bursts around the mother and child and the glowing ground behind the hands create a tense, symbolic charge across the triptych.
