About this work
A pale cat sits upright and alert in the foreground of a darkening yard, facing directly out of the canvas. Behind it a leaning fence, a small shed and low houses with lit windows recede into shadow, and a bare tree stands to the right. On the horizon a band of warm orange light marks the end of day.
Thick, muted strokes of grey-green and brown blur the yard into near-darkness, broken only by small dabs of yellow lamplight and the glowing strip of sunset. The cat's fur is built from soft dry-brush marks that catch what little light remains, and the heavy shadow and quiet stillness give the scene a somber, subdued mood.
