About this work
Two brick bridge towers with pyramidal caps anchor the composition, flanked by the iron lattice arches of a bascule bridge deck spanning grey water. Cables strung between the towers cut thin lines across a pale, clouded sky, while the far bank dissolves into haze and faint figures suggest movement across the span below.
Muted blues, ochres and rust browns build a chalky, granular surface of broken, dragged strokes that blur architectural edges into atmosphere. Diffused light picks out the tower crests and railings with touches of white, and the loose, painterly handling gives the scene a damp, overcast, quietly industrial calm.
