About this work

A pale bust-length figure in a dark green cloak with a white collar faces forward beneath a small hovering crown, its two eyes painted in different colors, one warm brown and one pale blue. Below, on a mottled blue-grey tabletop, a gold-and-red chess piece and a white chess piece stand facing each other, flanked by two tiny red spheres and a plain white egg.

The figure emerges from a flat black background that concentrates attention on the pale, lit face and the objects below. Paint is smooth and softly blended on the skin, looser and more textured in the green robe. The chess pieces and egg form a quiet symbolic still life, giving the portrait a guarded, enigmatic stillness.
