About this work
A ballerina is seated on the floor, one leg tucked beneath her and the other extended forward with pointe shoes crossed at the ankle. Her head is tilted back and turned upward, eyes gazing off past the frame, while one hand rests lightly near her foot. The layered tulle of her tutu is indicated in loose, feathery strokes around her hips.
Rendered entirely in graphite, the drawing builds form through soft tonal shading and quick, energetic hatching, leaving the tutu and floor as rapid, unfinished marks. The face and upper body are the most resolved passages, modeled with careful gradations of light and shadow, giving the study a light, contemplative quiet.
