About this work
Two weathered brick pillars joined by a broad stone arch dominate the foreground, framing a panoramic snow-covered village below: clustered pitched roofs, a church with pointed windows, a small stone bridge, and bare trees rising through drifted snow. Beyond the rooftops, hills and hazy distant buildings fade into a pale, overcast sky.
Soft ochre, rose, and grey-white tones are built from small, dabbed, pointillist-like strokes that give the stonework and snow a granular, tapestry-like surface. Diffuse light glows evenly across the scene rather than falling from one clear direction. The invented gateway and fairy-tale village create a dreamlike, quietly mysterious atmosphere.
