About this work
A red-painted wooden table fills the frame, scarred and speckled with old paint, holding a scattering of everyday objects: a turquoise tray crowded with small items, a green enamel mug, a chipped white saucer, a cracked rectangular glass ashtray, and a worn paperback book lying open-faced at the corner.
Thick strokes of cadmium red dominate the composition, set off by cool teal and green accents in the mug, tray and book cover. Loose, confident brushwork and visible canvas texture give the arrangement an unposed, snapshot informality, while the tight cropping and warm-cool contrast create a quiet, conversational intimacy between the objects.
