About this work
Richly patterned carpets are draped and folded to form the backdrop for a cluster of objects: a burgundy velvet cloth spilling over an ornamented casket, strands of pearls and beads, a folded letter, sketches and a small painted panel propped behind, and a single feather. In front, a tall brass ewer stands between a round metal tray, a small copper jug, and a porcelain saucer holding a coil of turquoise and coral beads.
The palette is dominated by deep reds, burgundies, and warm metallic golds, set against the cooler grey plaster wall behind. Light rakes across the metal surfaces, picking out sharp highlights on the ewer and tray while the carpets are rendered in dense, textured strokes that capture their woven patterns. The crowded arrangement and warm, low light give the still life a heavy, opulent richness.
