About this work
Two young ballerinas share a backstage bench, a third dancer visible in shadow behind them. One, in a pink top and white tutu, bends to fasten her pointe-shoe ribbons while glancing sideways; the other, in a red skirt and white blouse, turns toward her holding an open fan, a bowl of cherries and pieces of fruit set on the table beside them.
Warm pastel tones of pink, red, and ochre are built up in soft, blended strokes typical of pastel on paper, with drapery in the background rendered as loose washes of color. Soft, diffused light models the figures gently, and the relaxed poses and turned heads create an intimate, quiet moment of conversation between rehearsals.
