About this work

A lone beetle, viewed from directly above with legs and antennae spread symmetrically, occupies the center of an otherwise empty black field. Its head is pale flesh-toned with dark eyes, while its thorax and wing cases carry an intricate blue floral pattern painted as if the insect's shell were glazed porcelain.

Oil paint is built up in careful, textured strokes, with a shimmering play of white, cobalt and turquoise blues over a pale cream ground, sharply lit against the flat black backdrop. The illusion of glazed ceramic fused onto a living creature gives the picture a quiet, mysterious, slightly uncanny stillness.
