About this work
A man's face fills the lower half of the canvas, his gaze fixed and direct, framed by a corona of upright red feather-like strokes and a gold, cross-hatched border. Above his head a large red-winged bird with a pale blue neck spreads its wings; a luminous pale beam runs from the bird down the center of his face, over the bridge of his nose.
Warm gold at the top gives way to deep red and near-black tones patterned with fine linework, while the face is modeled in muted greens and ochres streaked with pale blue. The layered symbolism and steady, unblinking stare give the image a solemn, otherworldly intensity.
