About this work

A large stick nest sits atop a bare tree against an expanse of blue sky streaked with clouds. Two young storks stand together in the nest looking upward, while a third stork descends toward them with wings spread and legs extended for landing, and a fourth flies past overhead with wings raised, red legs trailing behind.

The birds are painted with crisp, graphic contours of white, black and pale ochre plumage, sharply set off from the loosely brushed sky behind them. Broad strokes of blue and white build up the clouds with visible canvas texture, giving depth and movement to the background. The composition feels buoyant and alive, capturing the birds mid-flight around their nest.
