About this work

Several freshly caught river fish hang strung along the pole of a blue-and-white striped beach tent, beside a dented enamel kettle, a tin cup, a lit lantern and an axe propped in the sand. Reeds and leafy branches frame the grouping, and a distant ship sits on the pale water under a hazy sky.

Painted in oil with confident, textured strokes, the composition plays warm ochre sand and silvery fish scales against the tent's cool blue stripes and the turquoise river beyond. Bright midday light and reflected color in the wet sand give the still life a cheerful, sun-baked outdoor feel.
