About this work
A tall bouquet of white lilies, pink carnations, blue morning glories and rust dahlias rises from a black-figure urn on a marble ledge inside a dark arched niche. A cockatoo and a smaller parrot perch beside apples, grapes and a split pomegranate at the base of the arrangement.
The near-black background sets off luminous whites and saturated reds and blues in the manner of classical flower painting. Smooth, detailed brushwork renders petals, feathers and fruit skins with fine precision, while the shadowed arch and muted marble ledge give the still life a hushed, formal solemnity.
