About this work
Three pomegranates, one split open, sit in a tall crackle-glazed white bowl with a scalloped rim. Beside it stands a dark, embossed bottle labeled 'Vintage', flanked by a cluster of red grapes and a golden pear, with a halved lemon set in front. A handwritten note in old script lies behind the bowl, the whole arrangement resting on richly patterned cloths in olive, rose and cream.
Warm russet, gold and moss-green tones are built up with dense, textured brushwork that treats the ceramic glaze, fruit skins and embossed metal bottle with equal decorative emphasis. Light falls softly from the left, picking out the pomegranates' ribbed skins and the bottle's raised ornament. The overall effect is opulent and quietly festive, closer to tapestry than illusionistic still life.
