About this work
On a dark tabletop, a small wooden cabinet holds a single deep-purple peony at its top, while loose white peonies and green leaves spill across the surface beside it. The composition sets the cabinet's hard edges against the flowers' soft, rounded forms.
Thick, loaded brushstrokes in warm ochre, black, and touches of red build the shadowed background, while the white blossoms are laid in with confident strokes of unmixed white. Uneven light picks out the flowers and cabinet, leaving the lower register in near-black shadow for a somber, richly worked mood.
