About this work
A whole fish rests on a white plate at the center of the composition, its tail and dorsal fin raised, surrounded by a dark ceramic kettle, an empty stemmed glass, a green bottle with a red liqueur label, and a lemon in the lower corner. Everything sits on a bright orange-red cloth draped over a brown tabletop against a plain ochre wall.
Paint is applied thickly with a palette knife in broad, faceted strokes, the dark kettle and bottle set against the hot orange cloth for maximum contrast. Whites on the plate and fish are built from chalky, dragged highlights, while the background stays flat and muted, giving the still life a bold, high-contrast, almost theatrical intensity.
