About this work
A red cloth is pegged to a line strung across the upper half of the canvas, its folds hanging down beside a shelf holding a plaster head cast, a small dark figurine, an autumn bouquet with berries, and green apples; below, a wooden table holds a mantel clock, a plaster statuette, a red apple, and a red vase filled with paintbrushes, with sprigs of rowan scattered at the base.
Warm ochre and brown tones dominate the background and furniture, set off by the saturated red of the hanging cloth and vase and small red berries; broad, flat brushwork and simplified shading give the objects a solid, sculptural presence, creating a dense, studio-like still life heavy with texture and color.
