About this work
Four bright yellow, lemon-shaped fruits lie on a blue, orange and white striped cloth, three on a white napkin and one lower on the fabric. A white cup or bowl sits at the bottom edge, and an art-book page reproducing a Matisse floral still life is placed upside down across the cloth, its title reading 'Henri Matisse.'
Saturated blues, oranges and yellows are applied in bold, flat strokes with strong outlines, echoing the decorative color sense of the reproduced image itself. The high-key palette and patterned textiles give the still life a lively, decorative energy rather than a naturalistic one.
