About this work
A tall brass samovar stands at the center of a crowded tabletop, flanked by a cream jug and a red clay jug both holding dried sunflower stalks and poppy pods, plus a dark metal pitcher with dried grasses. In front, a white bowl, cucumbers, a peach, apples and heads of garlic are scattered across worn wooden planks, with a round woven mat hanging behind the samovar.
Deep browns and warm ochres dominate, the samovar's polished metal catching soft raking light from the left that models each object in careful chiaroscuro. Paint is applied smoothly with fine detail on textures - metal sheen, dried petals, vegetable skins - in a traditional realist manner, quiet and homely.
