About this work
A pale pink jug filled with dark, dried seed heads on wiry curling stems dominates the upper half of the composition. Beside it sits a rounded black chicken, its form reduced to a soft dark silhouette with a ruffled crest, and to the right a small white bowl holds a spoon. The objects rest on a plain surface in front of a flat, hazy blue-grey backdrop suggesting sea and sky.
Paint is applied thickly and directly, with visible brush and palette-knife marks defining the twisting stems and the chicken's form in a few economical strokes. The muted, cool palette of blues, browns and dusty pink is broken only by the warm terracotta of the jug's base, giving the small still life a subdued, quiet mood.
