About this work

A white ceramic bowl overflows with a mixed harvest of peaches, a golden apple, bunches of pale green and dark grapes, and dusky plums, a loose sprig of grapes trailing over the bowl's foot. It rests on the turned-back corner of an ornately patterned red and blue carpet, its floral medallions filling the foreground against a bare, mottled wall.

Warm oranges, golden yellows and deep plum-violet stand out against the pale, scumbled grey-cream backdrop, while the carpet's saturated reds and blues anchor the lower half of the canvas. Light falls softly from the left, glazing the fruit's skins and leaving the wall loosely brushed behind it, in a realist still-life manner that feels calm and abundant.
