About this work
A blue-and-white patterned vase filled with pink and white blossoms anchors a table set for a summer meal: a stemmed dish heaped with grapes, plums, apricots, a pear, and yellow apples, with pale wedges of melon spread across a blue-and-white striped cloth in the foreground. Wrought-iron candlesticks and a dark wine bottle stand in the shadowed background.
Paint is applied in loose, confident strokes with visible impasto in the flowers and fruit, colors ranging from deep blues and greens to warm ochre and pink highlights. Light falls from the left, picking out the porcelain glaze and fruit skins against darker foliage, giving the arrangement a lively, fresh-picked immediacy typical of a bright impressionistic still life.
