About this work
A dense tangle of meadow flowers fills the canvas edge to edge: deep blue cornflowers and nigella, lacy white umbels, buttery yellow blossoms with orange centers, and slender grass stems, with a single red butterfly resting near the top. No horizon or sky appears, so the eye stays close to the tangle of stems and petals.
Loose, visible brushstrokes build the greenery in short dabs of green, olive and blue, with thicker, more defined strokes picking out the flower heads in yellow, white and violet. The high-key palette and dappled, sunstruck light give the close-up view a fresh, impressionistic feel, capturing the loose vitality of a summer field rather than any single bloom.
