About this work
Four rounded haystacks are lined up behind a simple wooden fence along the crest of a hill, silhouetted against a clear evening sky. A pale moon hangs low above the horizon, its light catching the edges of the stacks and reflecting as a small bright streak in a puddle among the dark grass in the foreground.
The sky shifts from deep blue at the top to a soft rose-grey band near the horizon, painted in smooth, blended strokes, while the foreground grass and stacks are built up in thick, dark red-brown and green touches. The contrast between the glowing sky and the shadowed land gives the scene a quiet, hushed dusk atmosphere.
