About this work
A pale-faced woman in a dark, cross-patterned bodice and a rounded black headdress raises both open hands in a gesture of blessing or prayer. Loose auburn hair frames her face, and a dark bird with an outstretched wing perches at the lower right against a wall of flame-colored drapery.
The canvas is built almost entirely from golds, ambers and browns, with the figure's pale skin and the sky's cool blue-white the only contrasts. Heavy, worked strokes and scraped textures give the drapery a molten, fire-like quality, while the flat, patterned bodice and still gaze lend the image an icon-like, contemplative stillness.
