About this work
A wide canal curves past a tree-lined embankment where tall trunks, still mostly bare but touched with the first green of spring, rise beside a stone balustrade. A red and a yellow vintage car are parked on the roadway to the left, while pedestrians, including a woman in a floral skirt and a small dog, move along the path.
Bright, clean light picks out the new foliage in dabs of yellow-green against a vivid blue sky, while the canal's water reflects the buildings and railings in cool, broken strokes. The paint is applied thickly with a palette knife, giving the trees, pavement and figures a lively, textured surface that captures the freshness of early spring.
