About this work

A tall brick tower with a small iron-railed lookout platform rises at left above ochre and rust-colored courtyard buildings; through a gap in the roofline a ribbed blue dome topped with a cross appears in the distance. Slender trees in fresh green leaf line the yard between chimneyed rooftops, while a taller building's dark windows recede into shadow at right.

Loosely brushed oils set warm brick reds and ochres against a cool turquoise sky, as a bank of charcoal-grey storm cloud presses down from the upper corner. Thick, visible strokes render brick texture and foliage, and the sharp contrast between sunlit sky and darkening cloud gives the courtyard a tense, weather-charged atmosphere.
