About this work
The composition is dominated by an enormous bank of billowing storm clouds that occupy roughly four-fifths of the canvas, with only a thin band of bright sky breaking through near the center. Below, a low horizon holds dark tree lines, a scatter of small white houses, and open green and brown fields furrowed with plough lines running toward the viewer.
Grey, white and blue-grey tones are built up in broad, sweeping strokes that follow the movement of the clouds, while the fields below are painted in denser, more textured greens and umbers. The low horizon and towering sky give the scene a dramatic, weighty atmosphere, typical of open plein-air studies of the Russian countryside under changeable weather.
