About this work
Two vases, one green glass and one dark olive-toned, hold sprays of pink, magenta and red blossoms with fine dark branches and feathery green leaves rising against a pale, mottled backdrop. In front of the vases a loose cluster of green and mauve pears is set along the bottom edge of the canvas.
The flowers and leaves are simplified into flat dabs and angular strokes of pure color outlined in black, set against a densely stippled, speckled ground of white, grey and green. The flattened, decorative handling and dense all-over texture give the still life a bright, patterned, almost tapestry-like energy.
