About this work
A grassy hillside, dotted with dark firs and bare young birches just coming into leaf, slopes down from the foreground toward a wide, still river or lake framed by distant wooded ridges. The land falls away in soft rounded contours, with a strip of open field visible at the lower left before the slope resumes.
Color is built from soft greens, mauves and browns, with the hillside picking up faint pink reflections from a fading sky rendered in pale rose and grey. Brushwork is broad and blended, smoothing the transition between grass, foliage and distant water. The muted, tonal harmony and low light give the view a hushed, quiet stillness.
