About this work

A rough-hewn stone staircase climbs from the foreground through a canopy of gnarled trees, its worn steps and retaining walls built from irregular blocks. Through the branches, a long colonnaded building with a stone balustrade appears on a ridge, and beyond it a bare, sunlit mountain range fills the upper distance.

The palette moves from cool grey-green foliage to the warm ochre and rose tones of sun-struck stone, built up in thick, choppy strokes that render the texture of rock and bark. Dappled light falls unevenly across the steps, giving the hidden, climbing path a quiet, contemplative feel.
